For MEST: Following the release of Partech's 2018 annual report on the state of funding in Africa, we discuss alternative forms of capital that might work in the context of the African startup space, as well as the expectations investors and stakeholders need to have in these markets and how this requires a different mindset than Silicon Valley.

Like Smart City initiatives across the world, cities in Africa are initiating tech and data-driven solutions to overpopulation issues caused by drastically increasing urbanization. These solutions often take the form of entire new satellites or “tech cities” being built alongside existing urban areas, from the ground up.

USE CASE: HOW BITCOIN WAS USED TO FIGHT EBOLA

In an article for Business Fights Poverty, Thea discussed how a startup called Bitcoin Against Ebola, a non-profit created by the team from Beam Remit, is utilizing mobile technology and digital currency to enable low-cost, fast and direct donations to those on the ground in Sierra Leone.
